My plein air sketches (ink/wash) were rendered in and around Holden Village, a Lutheran Retreat Center located in the North Cascades of Washington state (USA). Six times in the 1980s- 1990s we climbed aboard the Lady of the Lake passenger ferry and sailed up Lake Chelan en route to the Village. We quickly learned that Holden is not a destination, but an experience. A great place for families, Christian community enriched our lives and strengthened our faith. We were challenged by speakers and Holden’s example to better ourselves, hone our values, dig deeper into the faith, while being supported, valued, encouraged, and inspired. Don was on staff as Village Naturalist; I loved setting up my folding stool down the trail or up by the ball park. Working face to face in and with God’s creation was a time of contemplation and revelation. Along with the joy of a flowing brush and a steady pen, for me it became a direct encounter with that sense of divine Mystery. It is indeed a wondrous world! Enjoy the drawings. May you be blessed with a trip to Holden!
